Technology and applications

Micro molding describes the difficulty of producing and handling tiny features, not a universal part-weight threshold. Some jobs need sub-gram shots; others are defined by a thin wall, small insert, fine optical or fluidic detail, or a tight dimensional requirement. The mold, material and measurement method can dominate the outcome. Start the enquiry with the finished component and its function, then decide whether a dedicated micro press, a modular unit or a larger machine is justified.

Tool design is central. Gate size and position, runner volume, venting, ejection and cavity balance become more consequential as part mass falls. A large runner can waste costly resin and lengthen cycle time, but a direct gate can leave an unacceptable mark or create a maintenance challenge. Ask the toolmaker and machine supplier to review these choices together. If responsibility is split, name the party accountable for achieving the agreed molded-part specification.

Medical components, electronics, precision mechanics and microfluidic features can impose very different controls. A medical device component may need a qualified clean production environment and traceable process records. An electronics insert may require controlled positioning and electrical inspection. A tiny seal may call for liquid silicone equipment rather than a thermoplastic process. No general micro molding label demonstrates suitability for every application.

Select the cell around the complete workflow. Feeding, drying, mold temperature control, part extraction, camera inspection and collection can occupy more space than the press. Parts may be lost, damaged or mixed during transfer even when molding is stable. Ask how the proposed layout identifies each cavity's output, removes rejects and protects delicate features through packing.

Materials and process control

Specify the actual grade, color, moisture condition and approved additives before comparing machines. A small plasticizing volume can reduce residence time for some materials, but a poor match between shot size and barrel capacity can still expose melt to excessive heat history. Ask suppliers to calculate material throughput and residence at the planned cycle, including pauses and startup. Use the resin producer's processing requirements as input to a documented trial.

Define what the process must measure. Part mass alone cannot reveal all defects in a tiny gear, channel or sealing feature. A practical control plan may combine cavity pressure or machine signals with microscopy, dimensional inspection, functional tests and periodic destructive checks. The exact methods depend on the part. Agree which instrument is used, its resolution, sampling frequency and treatment of borderline results before acceptance testing.

Run a trial long enough to expose drift, not just to produce a display sample. Include warmup, steady production, planned stops and restart. Keep parts identified by cavity and time so a failure can be traced to a process change. Record mold and material batches, approved settings, environmental conditions and reject reasons. A claimed tolerance is meaningful only when the measurement method and production conditions are stated.

If a controlled environment is required, specify the room and cell boundaries separately. A cleanroom-compatible machine or optional laminar-flow enclosure does not qualify the finished operation. Confirm cleaning access, lubricant exposure, particle generation, personnel procedures and downstream packaging with the team responsible for the facility's qualification.

Supplier selection and quality

Send every bidder the same request: 3D part model, critical dimensions, annual and batch volumes, material grade, color, expected cavity count, inspection plan and intended production environment. Mark the features that are functionally critical. Ask each supplier to state assumptions and exceptions instead of filling gaps with a catalog rating. If the mold is not designed, request a joint design-for-manufacture review before a binding machine choice.

Compare demonstrated capability at the specified part and tool. A vendor may show a machine making a small demonstration component, but another resin or geometry may require different injection control, venting or extraction. Ask for relevant application examples without assuming that a reference customer will share confidential data. Treat supplier tests as evidence of the proposed configuration only when the tested material, tool and quality criteria are documented.

Write factory acceptance and site acceptance separately. Factory acceptance can test the quoted cell with representative material and mold; site acceptance also checks utilities, installed automation and trained operators. Define stable-run duration, sample size, cavity-level criteria, scrap accounting and response to a failed test. Assign costs and responsibilities for corrective work in advance.

Service deserves the same scrutiny as technical fit. Ask who supports the machine control, injection unit, mold, hot runner, robot and inspection devices in the destination country. Verify manuals, training language, remote-access terms, spare-part availability and escalation time in the quotation. For a highly integrated cell, one supplier may coordinate support, but the contract should state who owns each interface.

Costs and procurement

Compare installed cost per acceptable part, not press price or nominal cycle time alone. Include mold development, auxiliary equipment, material conditioning, inspection, installation, operator training and planned maintenance. Estimate material consumed by parts, runners, purging and startup rejects. A direct-gated design can reduce waste for a suitable part, but tooling and maintenance costs may differ from a conventional runner system.

Use an agreed production scenario for every quotation: same resin, part, cavity count, annual demand, shift pattern and quality criteria. Ask for utility demand at that scenario and identify measurement boundaries. Evaluate production rate after rejects and planned changeovers. If a supplier offers several configurations, keep each configuration's price, output and acceptance conditions together rather than mixing the best figures from different options.

Make schedule risk visible. Tool iterations, sample approval, regulatory work where applicable, site preparation and shipment can govern startup more than machine manufacturing. Tie payments to reviewable deliverables, including drawings, trial reports, manuals and acceptance results. Retain a written process for resolving a tool or machine that misses the agreed result.

Frequently asked questions

Does a smaller clamping force make a machine suitable for micro molding?

No. Clamp size must fit the mold and filling pressure, but shot control, melt residence, gate and runner design, extraction and inspection also matter. Check the proposed configuration against the complete molded shot and the finished part's functional requirements.

Is a dedicated micro press always preferable to a modular injection unit?

No. A dedicated press may package small-shot injection and handling efficiently. A modular unit may better fit a plant that needs other work from the same machine. Compare the actual part trial, conversion scope, installed footprint and total cost for both routes.
