Choosing molding for the component

PEEK is used in applications such as wear components, electrical parts and demanding medical or industrial assemblies. Injection molding can reproduce complex geometry over repeated production runs, with the upfront commitment of a dedicated tool. Machining can be attractive during development or for geometry that would make tooling difficult. The decision depends on quantity, feature access, material utilization and the evidence required for the finished part.

A machined prototype is useful for fit and assembly work, but it does not reproduce the flow history of a molding. Reinforced material adds another difference because fiber orientation depends on the manufacturing route. Qualification should therefore include molded parts when molding is the released process. Any critical feature finished by machining needs its own controlled allowance, fixture and inspection step.

Material selection starts with service conditions

PEEK alone is an incomplete purchasing specification. The resin producer, commercial grade, filler type and content, color and approved source define the material to be quoted. Bearing compounds, glass-filled grades and carbon-filled grades can have different flow, surface and dimensional behavior. A proposed substitution needs a technical review of the properties that matter to the application.

The design brief should describe sustained and peak temperatures, load direction, chemicals, friction, pressure and any sterilization exposure. A data-sheet property measured on a standard specimen is useful for comparing materials. It does not establish the performance of a thin molded feature, a weld line or a complete assembly under a different loading condition.

Materials and process control

Temperature settings and crystallinity

PEEK is semi-crystalline, and the cooling history affects the structure of the molded part. Victrex's crystallinity explanation describes how inadequate mold temperature can create amorphous surface regions. Consistency across the tool matters, so a controller setpoint should be supported by evidence that relevant cavity surfaces reach the intended condition. A universal crystallinity percentage is unsuitable as a purchasing shortcut; the grade, section thickness, process and agreed test method define the acceptance approach.

Grade data provides more useful temperature guidance than one generic PEEK recipe. For example, the Victrex 150GL30 data sheet lists a 380°C nozzle setting and a 170–200°C mold range among its typical laboratory processing conditions. Those numbers describe that grade's guidance and are distinct from melt measurements, polymer melting temperature and final service limits. The supplier must establish the actual process window for the part.

Preparation and time in the machine

Material preparation needs a recorded drying method and protected transfer to the press. The selected resin producer's instructions govern the target condition. A purchase specification should also define whether colorant, recovered runners or regrind are permitted, with any restrictions carried into the setup and release records.

Victrex's injection-molding processing guide emphasizes matching the machine's material capacity to total shot weight and controlling thermal residence. For small components, a large barrel can leave material hot for too long even when the machine has ample pressure and temperature capability. Startup, interruption and shutdown procedures therefore deserve review alongside normal cycle settings. Purging and handling equipment also need controls against contamination from other resins.

The approved process record should distinguish machine settings from observations on the part. Changes to a temperature or pressure setting may be necessary during development, but release needs to identify the accepted window and the response to a deviation. This gives production staff a usable basis for action after a stoppage or equipment repair.

Tooling and maintenance

The tool concept should show gates, runners, vents, ejection and thermal-control equipment. Fine features and reinforced compounds can make wear at gates and shutoffs particularly consequential. Replaceable elements and defined inspection points help keep maintenance aligned with the dimensions on the drawing.

A cold runner consumes material on each cycle and needs a decision about disposal or approved recovery. A hot runner can reduce that material stream, while adding heated passages, controls and maintenance. The supplier's comparison should include startup waste, changeovers and handling as well as steady-state material use. The preferred design depends on the actual shot and operating pattern.

Metal inserts introduce a further thermal and dimensional interface. The insert and its finish must tolerate the process, remain correctly located and meet their functional requirement after cooling. The resulting assembly needs appropriate retention, leakage or electrical tests; a satisfactory dimension on the plastic alone leaves that interface unverified.

Supplier selection and quality

Evidence tied to the molded part

The best comparison begins with the proposed grade, plant, machine and tool concept. A supplier should identify any feature it cannot commit to without trials and explain what those trials will resolve. A material list establishes relevance, but examples using a comparable wall section, flow path or reinforcement are more useful when discussing manufacturing risk.

Dimensional reports need a defined measurement temperature, conditioning period, fixture and datum scheme. Cavity identity is valuable for tools producing several parts each cycle. The buyer and supplier should agree how dimensions will be assessed after any specified thermal treatment or secondary operation so reports describe the same delivered condition.

Functional verification should represent the component's service. Depending on the application, the evidence may include leakage, friction, electrical isolation, load testing or performance after thermal exposure. Material certificates establish what resin entered production. The tests on molded parts establish how the manufactured geometry behaves under the agreed conditions.

Medical and other controlled programs

A medical application requires attention to the exact formulation, intended contact and downstream processing. Industrial PEEK and a grade selected for an implant-related use are not interchangeable by polymer name. The supplier's role in material documentation, process validation and device support should be explicit, with the device manufacturer coordinating the overall acceptance requirements.

Quality agreements should cover resin substitutions, tool modifications, changed inspection methods and production transfers. A second press or plant may have different thermal control and handling arrangements. The transfer plan needs an assessment of those differences and defined evidence for approval. Original qualification records are most useful when they preserve the reasons behind important process choices.

Costs and procurement

PEEK's material cost makes runner mass and production waste worth examining, particularly on small parts. Tooling, heating, inspection and qualification can still dominate the overall program. A commercial comparison should separate those costs and use the same annual demand, batch sizes and delivered-part requirements for every supplier.

The RFQ package should contain the controlled drawing and model, exact grade, critical dimensions, allowed gate locations and service conditions. It also needs quantities, variants, cleanliness and packaging requirements. The response should name the manufacturing site and identify what is included in tooling, sampling, validation support and production release.

Useful quotation detail includes:

• Resin purchasing responsibility, minimum material orders and treatment of unused stock.
• Total shot weight, runner strategy and permitted material recovery.
• Tool maintenance, spare cavity elements and dedicated heating or handling equipment.
• Inspection and functional tests included with routine deliveries.
• Ownership and transfer records for the tool and supporting fixtures.

Development work is easier to control when each stage has a deliverable. A feasibility trial may resolve filling or ejection; a later tool trial may establish dimensional correction; qualification then demonstrates the intended production configuration. Combining these into one vague sample charge makes it difficult to understand what the buyer has approved or what remains uncertain.

Volume discounts should be evaluated against the real release pattern. A quoted saving at a large run size can be offset by additional inventory or repeated material changes elsewhere in the schedule. Agreement on capacity, changeover assumptions and future revisions helps purchasing compare the total cost of supply across the expected life of the part.

What temperatures are required to mold PEEK?

The required settings depend on the commercial grade and component. Resin producers publish grade-specific barrel, nozzle and mold guidance; those values describe different parts of the process. A supplier should demonstrate adequate equipment capability and establish a qualified window instead of applying one temperature to every PEEK job.

Does every PEEK molding need annealing?

No. Victrex describes injection-molded components produced without annealing. Thermal treatment may be appropriate for particular designs or requirements, but it needs a defined purpose and acceptance method. If included, its effect on dimensions and the delivered condition belongs in the production specification.

Can reinforced PEEK use the same tool as an unfilled grade?

A shared tool may be possible, but changes in flow, shrinkage, orientation and wear need evaluation. A substitution can alter dimensions or loaded surfaces even if the polymer family is unchanged. Trial data and the required acceptance tests should determine whether tool or process changes are needed.
