The difficult feature defines the project

A micro part may be a tiny complete component or a larger molding with a very small functional feature. Typical examples include gears, catheter-related parts, connectors and diagnostic channels. Their failure modes differ. A gear needs tooth geometry and concentricity; a fluidic component may depend on channel continuity and a clean sealing surface. One broad tolerance applied to the whole drawing rarely describes either job well.

The first engineering review is most productive with an assembly section and a marked drawing. These show which surfaces locate the part, contact fluid or light, carry load, or must remain free of flash. A gate witness on an unused face may be harmless. The same witness beside a seal can make the component unusable. Those priorities give the toolmaker room to propose a workable gate, split line and ejection arrangement.

Published capability numbers need context. Accumold's design guidelines organize the discussion around the part and molding platform. A supplier's smallest demonstrated feature, lightest component and tightest achieved tolerance may come from different projects. Combining those numbers into one assumed production specification creates a misleading requirement. Feasibility belongs to the selected geometry, resin and measurement method.

Filling is only one part of the cycle

Small cavities place demanding requirements on shot delivery, venting and the balance between filling and cooling. Tooling must also release the component without distorting its working surfaces. A mold trial should therefore evaluate fill, ejection and collection together. Samples taken carefully by an engineer can conceal handling problems that emerge when the same parts drop into a container during an unattended run.

For a channel or thin wall, the development plan should show how complete filling will be verified. For a delicate arm or pin, it should include evidence after removal and packaging. These checks connect the molding result to the condition in which the buyer receives the product.

Materials and process control

Shot size, material history and tooling

The material specification needs the commercial grade, approved source, color and any reinforcement. Substituting a nominally similar resin can change flow and shrinkage in the very feature that controls function. Drying and handling requirements come from the grade supplier, with the molder defining how they are maintained at the machine.

Total shot weight includes the runner as well as the parts. That distinction affects barrel selection, residence time and material cost. A small finished component can consume much more polymer than its own mass suggests. The quotation should show runner treatment and any restrictions on recovered material so the buyer can compare production concepts consistently.

Tool maintenance deserves particular attention at gates, vents and fine shutoffs. The maintenance record should describe the released geometry, wear limits and replaceable elements. After a repair, the same critical features need to be measured with the same method used for approval. A general statement that the mold has returned to service leaves the buyer without evidence of what changed.

Handling and cleanliness

Tiny parts can cling to surfaces, move with static charge or suffer damage during separation. Practical controls may include carriers, dedicated collection paths, vision checks or packaging that preserves orientation. The chosen approach needs to work through startup, normal running and recovery from a jam.

Cleanliness requirements should cover the complete route, including metrology and packing. A classified molding area does not describe what happens in an external inspection room or during transport. Product-specific limits for particles or residues, where needed, belong in the acceptance specification. Packaging materials and handling procedures then become controlled parts of the process instead of late purchasing decisions.

Supplier selection and quality

Measurement must support the tolerance

For each critical characteristic, the inspection plan should identify a fixture, measurement method and sampling point. Instrument resolution is only one consideration. A flexible feature can deform in a fixture; an optical edge can shift with lighting or analysis settings. Agreement on part orientation and datum construction prevents two laboratories from reporting different answers for the same component.

A practical qualification exercise includes repeated measurements and, where relevant, comparison between the supplier's system and the buyer's. Computed tomography can help investigate internal geometry, but scan settings and analysis also need agreement. A three-dimensional image by itself does not establish measurement accuracy.

Functional tests fill gaps left by dimensional inspection. Depending on the design, these may assess flow, leakage, contact continuity or assembly force. Their conditions should represent the intended use and identify which defect the test detects. Sampling plans also need to account for destructive tests and parts that cannot return to the product stream after inspection.

Production evidence and change control

The nominated supplier should connect qualification samples to the intended mold, cavities, machine and handling route. Cavity identity helps isolate a recurring defect and supports targeted maintenance. When a molded cavity mark is impractical, separated collection or production records can provide another traceability method.

Medical programs may include an ISO 13485 quality system. Its certificate supports evaluation of the manufacturer's quality management; drawing compliance and process acceptance still require part-specific evidence. The quality agreement should also cover resin substitutions, tool repairs, inspection-program changes and transfers between sites, with the required notification and approval steps defined before routine orders begin.

Costs and procurement

At micro scale, tool development, inspection and handling can outweigh the resin contained in the part. A realistic comparison separates engineering, tooling, trials, qualification support and recurring production. Unit prices should use the same forecast, release quantity, inspection plan and packaging format. Otherwise, a nominal saving may simply reflect less work in the supplier's scope.

The RFQ needs five connected inputs:

• The controlled drawing and model, with functional datums, no-flash areas and permitted gate and ejector locations.
• The exact resin grade and the application's mechanical, fluidic, electrical or optical requirements.
• Forecast volumes, order sizes, expected variants and the intended assembly method.
• Required measurement, functional testing, traceability and environmental controls.
• Tool ownership, maintenance, spare components and records needed for a future transfer.

Supplier responses are most useful when they identify the uncertain feature and propose a trial that resolves it. A paid feasibility stage can be sensible for a difficult channel or gate arrangement. Its deliverable should be explicit: measured samples, a revised design or a decision about whether to proceed to production tooling.

The purchase agreement should address who pays for development changes and where the boundary lies between a tool correction and a customer design revision. It should also state what accompanies a transferable mold: final drawings, approved settings, maintenance history and any dedicated handling or measurement fixtures. These details affect the cost of future supply decisions as much as the initial mold price.

Is there a standard size limit for micro molding?

Suppliers use the term for several combinations of low part mass, small features and close tolerances. An individual company's published threshold is a capability description. The working specification for a purchase remains the drawing, resin and demonstrated ability to fill, handle and measure the component consistently.

Can a supplier guarantee its smallest advertised tolerance on every feature?

A published tolerance needs the material, geometry and measurement context behind it. Local feature tolerances and dimensions spanning the whole part can behave differently. The supplier should identify which requirements it can commit to and which need trials, design changes or a different measurement approach.

Should a micro mold have many cavities?

Cavity count depends on demand, balance, tool access and the ability to inspect each cavity's output. More cavities can lower conversion cost, while increasing tooling and maintenance obligations. Development samples from one cavity need a defined route to approval of the eventual production tool.

How can buyers avoid losing or damaging parts after molding?

Define the delivery format before tooling approval. Carriers, runners, trays or oriented packaging may suit different assembly methods. Trial the complete handling route with representative parts, including rejection and recovery, so the buyer receives a known quantity in a condition its own equipment can use.
