PET Bottle Lightweighting: Sidel Reports a 9 g Arpanon Bottle

PET bottle lightweighting has brought Arpanon Beverage’s SENDAI 600 ml water bottle down to nine grams, according to a September 15, 2026 announcement from Sidel.

The supplier says the bottle was commercialised on a 36,000-bottle-per-hour Combi line, with an approximately 30% reduction in bottle weight. It reports top-load performance exceeding 30 kg without nitrogen dosing and a 50% reduction in electricity consumption per unit. Editorial analysis: define the denominator before comparing savings

The number we would ask a buyer to examine first is not nine grams. It is the denominator behind an efficiency claim.

Does “per unit” mean every bottle produced, every accepted bottle or every filled bottle leaving the line? Which equipment is included in the electricity measurement? Were the before-and-after figures collected at comparable operating conditions? Those questions should accompany any proposed investment comparison.

Material savings can be illustrated without assuming a resin price. Removing one gram from each of one million bottles reduces the material contained in those bottles by one metric tonne. This is an illustrative calculation, not an additional measured result from Arpanon.

For an actual purchase decision, we would then ask for the rejected-bottle rate, sustained accepted output and agreed package tests. Request the conditions behind a top-load result and a trial reflecting the intended filling, handling and distribution requirements.

A lighter design is worth evaluating, but one customer’s successful bottle is not a universal weight target. The buyer needs evidence that the proposed package works in the intended production system.

When comparing plastics-processing equipment, use the bottle specification and the line acceptance criteria together. A percentage without its baseline is a starting point for a question, not a completed business case.
